69-Day of Accountability / Al-Haqqah:

In God’s Name, whose Mercy is Great and Continuous:

(69:1)  The day of accountability.

(69:2)  What is the day of accountability?

(69:3)  You will not really understand until you see its reality.

(69:4)  The tribes of Thamud and Aad didn’t believe the terrifying day was approaching.

(69:5)  As for Thamud, they were destroyed by a deafening scream that shook everything.

(69:6)  As for Aad, they were destroyed by a frigid whirlwind.

(69:7)  I sent it against them for seven nights and eight days without abating. They looked like broken hollow palm trees knocked over, lying dead and decaying.

(69:8)  Are there any left of them living?

(69:9)  There was Pharaoh and those before him. And there were the people of Lot with their evil sinning.

(69:10) They rejected My messenger with My warning, so I hit them with a punishment that was devastating.

(69:11) And when the floods came, I saved your ancestors on the ship Noah spent his life building.

(69:12) These stories are a reminder to be remembered by those who pay attention to what is important.

(69:13) All it takes is one blow of the horn,

(69:14) the earth and mountains uproot and pound together,

(69:15) and you find the overwhelming day beginning.

(69:16) On that day, the sky will tear and weaken.

(69:17-18) On that day, angels will stand on its edges. Eight will carry My throne. You will be presented to Me and nothing will be kept hidden.

(69:19) Whoever gets their book of deeds in their right hand will say proudly, “Come everyone and read it!

(69:20) I knew I would be held accountable on this day, so I prepared for it.”

(69:21) They will have a happy life,

(69:22) in a high place in Paradise.

(69:23) Its fruits are close and easy to pick.

(69:24) Eat and drink and enjoy yourselves for your previous days of sacrifice.

(69:25) Those who get their book in their left hand will say, “I wish I didn’t receive it.

(69:26) I wish I didn’t see it.

(69:27) I wish my death had been the end of me.

(69:28) My wealth and money didn’t help me.

(69:29) All my power has left me.”

(69:30) Then I will say, “Take them and cuff them.

(69:31) Then in Hell throw them.

(69:32) Then take a long chain and tie them.

(69:33) They used to disbelieve in Me and

(69:34) didn’t encourage the feeding of the poor.

(69:35) On this day, there are no friends for them anymore.

(69:36) On this day, their only food is waste.

(69:37) Only the sinful will be forced to overcome its horrible taste.

(69:38) I swear by what you see

(69:39) and by what you don’t see,

(69:40) these are words delivered by an honorable messenger from Me.

(69:41) They are not the words of a poet, but you are not believing.

(69:42) They are not the words of a fortuneteller, but you are not submitting and praying.

(69:43) This message is sent from Me, the Lord of everything.

(69:44) If Prophet Muhammad made up something and said it was from Me,

(69:45) I would take him forcefully,

(69:46) cut his artery,

(69:47) and none of you could save him even if you acted quickly.

(69:48) This is a reminder to those who are afraid of My punishment.

(69:49) And I know some of you disbelieve it.

(69:50) It will cause grief to those who reject it.

(69:51) It is the true certainty.

(69:52) So glorify and remember Me by repeating My name. I am your Lord the Most Great.

Chapter Notes:

Verse 4: The tribe of Thamud was a major tribe and ancient civilization that lived several hundred miles to the North of Makkah. The civilization was destroyed, leaving behind their homes and buildings which they had carved into the side of mountains. Their vacant remains can still be visited today.

Verse 6: Aad was a famous ancient tribe from the people of Iram. The tribe of Aad lived several hundred miles to the south east of Makkah in a land of sand dunes. They were a major power in their area and they worshiped idols. They rejected the messenger God sent them, and so they were destroyed. All that is left of them is the remains of some of their buildings.
